The Large Silver Stripe – Argynnis Childreni Gray

Colour: Orange yellow
A common butterfly of 75-100 mm. Upper surface of wings orangish in colour with several black spots. Upper surface of the hind wing blue shot towards the lower corner. Under surface of the hind wing dark green with six silvery bands. This butterfly flies very fast and frequent road sides, glades and open areas settling frequently on ground and flowers. Recorded from Shillong, Laitkor, Dympep and Mawphlang during June – November.

The India Fritillary – Argynnis hyperbius (Johanssen)

Colour: Greenish brown
A common butterfly of 65-85 mm. Upper surface of wings greenish brown with a series of black spots. Under surface of the hind wing outwardly greenish brown or light brown and dark green inwardly. Upper surface of the fore wing tip of female blue with white band. This butterfly frequents open areas, glades, gardens etc. Recorded from Shillong, Mawphlang, Mawpat, Umtyngar, Umshing and Barapani during April - December.

The Eastern Silver Stripe – Argynnis laodice (Pallas)

Colour: Reddish brown
A somewhat uncommon butterfly of 65-75 mm. Upper surface of wings reddish brown with a series of black spots. Under surface of the hind wing with broken silver band in the middle area and with a reddish brown band at the base. Frequents hilly areas of Shillong, Laitkor and Umtyngar during June – August.

The Red Lace Wing – Cethosia biblis (Drury)

Colour: Red
A common butterfly of 65-90 mm. Male with tawny red colouration on the upper surface of the wing and the lower surface with golden brown colouration bearing cream coloured bands and black markings. A central pale, straight irregular bands present across both the wings. Female similar, but with moss green colouration on the upper surface of the wing. This butterfly is found to be confined to the hills. Recorded from Shillong and Mawphlang during February – October.

Colour: Red with a white band on fore wing tip
A somewhat common butterfly of 85-95 mm. Upper surface of the male wing tawny with a white band across the black apex of the forewing. Hind wing with a row of small black spots. Under surface of the wing with red, cream, pale blue, black and yellow colouration. Upper surface of the female wing pale greenish white. Lower surface as in male. Recorded from Shillong during January and July.

Colour: Yellow or Tawny
A common butterfly of 80-90 mm. Apex and outer edge of the upper surface of forewing narrowly black and with spots in a straight line on the upper surface of hind wing. Under surface of the wing with a broad white band in the middle area. Generally found in hills. Recorded from Nongpoh, Umran and Lawsohtun during June – August.

Colour: White
A somewhat common butterfly of 50-60 mm. With map like irregular markings on wings. Upper surface of wings white, semi-transparent and marked with irregular vertical dark lines across both wings. Wings broad with the lower corner of the fore-wing and hind wing tip as if cut off. Hind wing with a tail-like extension. This butterfly is commonly found in wet hilly jungles. Recorded from Umsning during May.

Colour: Dark reddish brown
A common butterfly of 45-60 mm. Outer edge of wings with rounded serration. Wing brown with highly waved black lines. Commonly found in the hills and forested areas. Recorded from Shillong during August.

Colour: Light greenish white
Considered to be a rare butterfly of 85-105 mm. Wings light greenish white in colour. Upper surface of the fore wing with a single row of pale spots on dark margin. Recorded from Shillong during August.

Colour: Dark brown with a broad pale greenish white band
A somewhat common butterfly of 78-85 mm. Upper surface of wing dark brown or black with a broad pale greenish white band across the middle area of both wings. Outer edge of the upper surface of the hind wing with small white spots towards the outer edge on the broad dark border. Recorded from Barapani during June.

Colour: Dark brown with orange markings
A common butterfly of 45-50 mm. Upper surface of wings dark brown with orange markings. The orange streak on the fore wing cell broad and cut twice anteriorly. Apex and posterior side of the upper surface of the forewing with an orange band each. Upper surface of hind wing with two orange bands, the one on the top broad and that in the lower area narrow. Under surface of wings finely streaked. This butterfly inhabits thick jungles of low elevations at times seen away from forest areas. Recorded from Nongpoh, Barapani and Shillong during March – November.

Colour: Black with white strips
A very common butterfly of 50-60 mm. Upper surface of the fore wing black with a short white streak in the middle area with an outwardly sharp white beyond the streak. Upper surface of the hind wing black with a white band which doe not widen towards the upper margin. Commonly found in forest and gardens. Recorded from Shillong, Mawpat and Barapani during March and July – September.

Colour: Black with white stripes
A common butterfly of 45-60 mm. Similar in general appearance to the common sailor, but distinguishable by the two pale lines, the outer one being obscure on the under surface of the hind wing. Recorded from Shillong, Umshing and Barapani during March – May.

Yerbury’s Sailor – Neptis yerburyi Butler

Colour: Black with white stripes
A somewhat common butterfly of 58-70 mm. Wings black with white marks similar to the common sailor and clear sailor in general appearance. However, it can be distinguished by the white band on the upper surface of the hind wing expanding to the upper margin and by the two prominent white lines on the margin of the lower surface of the hind wing. Recorded from Shillong and Lawsohtun during July and August.

The Common Sergeant – Pantoporia perius (Linnaeus)

Colour: Blackish brown
A somewhat common butterfly of 60-70 mm. Upper surface of the wings blackish brown with white marks. Upper surface of the fore wing with three white streaks and a fourth triangular one beyond the three from the basal portion towards the middle of the wing. Upper surface of the hind wing with prominent row of black spots on the inner edge of the white spots situated in the middle area of the wing. Lower surface of wing bright yellow. This butterfly is generally found in open areas. Recorded from Shillong and Umran during July – September.

Colour: Brownish black with white patches.
A somewhat rare butterfly of 55-75 mm. Upper surface of the forewing on the area extending from the base, with a white streak divided twice by a brown line and a triangular white spot well separated and beyond the streak. Recorded from Barapani during October.

The Common Leopard - Phalanta phalantha (Drury)

Colour : Tawny
A common butterfly of 50-60 mm. Upper surface of wings tawny with rows of black spots. Prominent black spot towards the hind edge on the under surface of the fore wing. Upper surface of the fore wing with four dark lines in the cell excluding a bar at the end of the cell. This butterfly is commonly found at the edges of jungles and in gardens. Recorded from Shillong during August.

Colour : Orange yellow
A common butterfly of 60-65 mm. Upper surface of wings light tawny with two eye spots in each wing. The eye spot on the upper margin of the hind wing very large compared to the rest. Outer edge of wings dark with three dark lines. Fore-wing with short dark bands from the upper margin. Commonly found visiting garden flowers. Recorded from Shillong, Mawpat, Barapani, Umtyngar and Lawsohtun during April-October.

Colour : Grey with brown lines
A common butterfly of 55-65 mm. Upper surface of wing gray with brown lines and a complete row of eye spots on both wings. Commonly found in low elevation areas of heavy rainfall especially around paddy fields and gardens. Recorded from Umtham during November.

The Yellow Pansy - Precis hierta (Fabricius)

Colour : Yellow
A common butterfly of 45-60 mm. Upper surface of the wings yellow. Fore-wing tip black with yellow white markings, lower margin black and broadly so at the lower comer, upper margin and outer edge narrowly black; with or without two obscure eye marks, which are prominent in females. Upper margin and basal areas of the upper surface of hind wings broadly black with a prominent shining oval blue patch. Recorded from Shillong, Barapani, Umtham and Umran during April -June.

Colour : Deep brown
A common butterfly of 55-80 mm Upper surface of wings brown with obscure dark brown bands and hind wing with a row of obscure eye spots. Fore-wing with or without eye spots. Tip of the fore-wing and lower corner of hind wing slightly protruded. Commonly found in wet-forested hilly areas. Recorded from Shillong, Laitkor and Mawphlang during June -Sept.

A common butterfly of 45-60 mm. Upper surface of the wings dark brown with two eye spots in each wing, one being prominent and with numerous lemon-yellow spots. Generally found in forest areas and gardens. Recorded from Umran during September.

Colour : Blue-black
A very common butterfly of 40-60 mm. Upper surface of the male fore-wing black at the basal area and pale brown with white bands at the wing tip. Upper surface of hind wing shining blue with the inner basal area velvety black. Upper surface of each wing with two eye spots. Female similar to male but with whole basal area of the upper hind wing black. Recorded from Cherrapunjee, Dympep, Mawphlang, Shillong, Laitkor and Mawpat during December -February.

Colour : Indigo blue
A somewhat common butterfly of 60- 75 mm. Upper surface of the wing indigo blue with paler blue band in the middle area on both wings. This butterfly is found in wooded areas in hills. Recorded from Umtyngar, Laitkor, Shillong and Lawsohtun during June and Sept.- Dec.

A very common butterfly of 55-70 mm. Upper surface of wings pinkish red or orange red with black markings. Found commonly in open places such as fields gardens and roads. Recorded from Shillong, Nongkrem, Laitkor, Mawpat, Mylliem, Mawphlang during April-December.

Colour : Brown with orange band on fore-wing
A common butterfly of 55-65 mm. Upper surface of wings dark brown with an orange red central band on fore-wing divided on the inside by large black spots. Hind wing with black spotted orange red band on the outer edge. Generally found in forests, open areas and nearby gardens. Recorded from Shillong during June.

Colour : Violet blue with orange band on fore-wing
A common butterfly of 85-110 mm. Upper surface of fore wing dark violet- blue to deep steel blue with orange band on the middle area and broad black wing tip. Under surface of wings brown and resemble a dry leaf. Tip of fore wing and lower comer of hind wing narrowly protruded resembling the tip and stem of leaf. This butterfly is generally found in wet thick forests of mountainous and hilly areas. Recorded from Umran during July.

Colour : Yellowish brown or greenish brown
A somewhat common butterfly of 72-110 mm. Forewing protruded and hind wing with a pointed tail. Upper surface of the male wing tawny or yellowish brown with two wavy black lines on the outer margin and one irregular line across the middle area of both wings. With two round eye shaped markings on the hind wings. Upper surface of the female wing bluish green or dark greenish brown with markings similar to male and with prominent white band across the middle area. Recorded from Shillong during October.

A small rare butterfly of 40-45 mm. Wing golden tawny in colour with 9 parallel dark lines across both wings. 6th line from base of the wing straight Generally found at low elevations. Recorded from Nongpoh during December.

Colour : Brownish black with orange bands
A somewhat common butterfly of / 40-55 mm. Under-surface of wings yellow with markings consisting of black spots and a series of blue or green markings on the margin and lower corner of the hindwing. Upper surface of wings dark with broad and narrow yellow to orange colour bands.

Generally found in shady watery nullahs, flying in sunshine and settling frequently on rocks, leaves and damp sand. Recorded from Nongpoh during November.

Colour : Brownish black with pale blue markings
A somewhat common butterfly of 95.105 mm. This butterfly resembles the chestnut tiger Danaus sita from which it can be distinguished by the much narrower pale markings and the cell of the forewing divided twice by dark bars.

This butterfly can be seen flying about in open spaces, in glades and on the edge of the forests. Also they can be found visiting wet sand and basking on leaves at the extremities of branches. Recorded from Nongpoh and Barapani during November.

Colour : Dark brown with a white band across the wing
A somewhat common butterfly of 65-90 mm. Upper surface of wings dark brown with a single white band on the middle area across both wings. In males, the brown is beautifully blue shot. Under surface of wings silvery with reddish brown narrow bands on the outer edge and middle area of the wing. This butterfly generally can be found flying near streams and settling on the damp sand and rocks with their wing expanded. They are also attracted to carrion, dung etc. Recorded from Nongpoh during October.

Colour : Velvet black or dark green with white spots
A somewhat common butterfly of 60-80 mm. Upper surface of the wings of male velvet black and female dark green. In both sexes, upper surface of the fore wing with rows of white spots on the wing margin and towards the inner area with obscure dull blue line between them, also one or two white spots are present on the middle area. Hindwing with a prominent row of black spots inwardly blue bordered (green bordered in female) and outwardly white. This butterfly is a rapid flier but settles frequently with wings open. Recorded from Nongpoh during October.

Colour : Brown
A somewhat common butterfly of 80-100 mm. Upper surface of the wing tawny or chestnut coloured with black markings on the tip and outer edge of the forewing. Forewing also with a yellowish green or whitish band through the middle area. This butterfly is confined to the jungles. Recorded from Nongpoh during January.

Colour : Golden Tawny
A somewhat common butterfly of 55-65 mm. Apex of the forewing produced. Hind wing with a tail like extension. Upper surface of wings golden tawny with narrow dark outer margins. Basal area of the fore wing dusky in colour and the middle area of the wing with dusky markings. Half portion of the edge of hind wing dusky.

This butterfly is found in low to moderate elevations in the hills. Recorded from Nongpoh during February.

The White Edged Blue Baron - Euthalia phemius {Doubleday}

Colour : Black or brown with white bands
A fairly common butterfly of 65-70 mm. Male and female different in appearance. Upper surface of the - wings of males dark brown with white streaks forming an irregular shape. Margin of the upper surface of the hindwing pale blue and the outer edge narrowly pure white. Female wings paler brown with a broad white band around the middle area of the upper surface of the forewing.

This butterfly is generally found at low elevations. Recorded from Shillong during August.

Colour : Dark brown with pale grey border
A fairly common butterfly of 65-80 mm. Upper surface of the wings dark brown with pale border on the hindwing. Narrow grey border to below apex of the fore wing.

Generally found in the wetter jungle regions. Recorded from Nongpoh during October.

The Autumn Leaf - Doleschallia bisaltide (Cramer)

Colour : Tawny
A somewhat common butterfly of 75-85 mm. Resembling the oakleaf butterfly (Kallima), but the fore wing apex and the hind wing lower corner not so produced as in Kallima. Under surface of wings leaf like often with silver spots basally. Two eye spots on the hindwing. Upper surface of the wing tawny with broad black apex bearing a tawny band.

Generally found in thick jungles at low elevations. Recorded from Nongpoh and Shillong during July and August.
