The State of Meghalaya was set up on the 21st January, 1972 under the provision of the North-Eastern Areas (Re-Organisation) Act, 1971. And in terms of the provisions of Section 77 all laws which were in force in the areas falling in Meghalaya continued to be in force. The conditions of service including the pay and allowances in respect of the employees allocated to the State of Meghalaya, therefore, continued as such.
The Third Assam Pay Commission’s recommendations were adopted with certain modifications by the Government of Meghalaya vide Resolution No.FEG.16/73/101 dated 7th August 1978 and were implemented with effect from 1st January, 1973.
The First, Second and Third Meghalaya Pay Commission were constituted by the State Government on the 1st August, 1978, 9th October, 1986 and 28th March 1995. The above Commissions’ recommendation after review and consideration thereof were given effect from 1.1.1979, 1.1.1987 and 1.1.1986 respectively.
The Fourth Meghalaya Pay Commission has been constituted by the Government of Meghalaya vide a Resolution No.F(PR)-21/2007/33, dated 20th Sept, 2007 with Shri K.K. Sinha (Retd. IAS) as its Chairman. The office of the Pay Commission has started functioning from room No. 509 Myntdu Building, Additional Secretariat with Shri Ajay Tewari, IAS as the Secretary and Shri D.B. Gurung, Retd. Director Accounts and Treasuries as Officer on Special Duty to the Commission.
